Taking Care of Business Soundtrack 1968

I bought my copy in the John Menzies bargain bin in 1982 for £1.

This television special was one of a number Supremes/Temptations joint projects during the late 60’s. The Supremes had recently replaced Florance Ballard with Cindy Birdsong and The Temptations had just switched David Ruffin with Dennis Edwards, and doing a high-profile television special helped to familiarise the audience with the new members. In addition, since the Supremes had a primarily white audience and the Temptations a primarily black audience, the special allowed the audiences of each to cross over. Finally, the special was a major showcase for Diana Ross, designed as one of the first steps towards launching her impending solo career, which officially began in January 1970.

I
f you are a real Motown purist the album is probably not for you, as it features lots of medleys. The best thing about the record is listening to the tongue in cheek commentary from the bands and the genuine rapport they have with each other. T.C.B. is watered down Temptations and Diana Ross & the Supremes. The songs are all backed by a big band - a bit like a Royal Variety performance, and loose their tightness because of it. But fans bought the album, and a bigger untapped audience discovered the versatility of two of the best vocal groups of all time.

  1. NGMods Says:

I’ve got one of these LP’s kicking around that brought The Supremes and the The Temptations together. Not sure whats on it, not even sure if I have ever listened to it !

  2. Janny Says:

Well NG I can pass this one over to you for MP3-ing - then you can hear it in all it’s glory!!

  3. ChrisC Says:

A lot of good songs on there Janny. But I am not so sure about the big band feel.

The next big article for someone to pen should be ‘whatever happened to the WE Mods.’ Did they ever really exist, and is Fudgie related to Lord Lucan !

  4. Janny Says:

Maybe Lord Lucan was an Glasgow Mod in the 80’s - he did have a dodgy tash afterall!!

  5. ChrisC Says:

Very possibly Janny. Although I have to be a wee bit controversial here and say that tashes were not really the thing for anyone during the Scene Club time. I was talking to NG the other day and I was telling him that I cannot really recall any of the guys then having one. Maybe it had something to do with the big notice on the door to the Scene Club that stated quite plainly that no admittance shall be given to anyone sporting something weird on their top lip, especially guys Li Li

You lot must have been quite easy on the mid 80s Mods to let them away with such carry on. They would never have heard the end of it from us, and similarities with Freddie Mercury, Village People, and gay bikers would have been pointed out.

  6. Lammy Chick Says:

Chris I think you will find that Andy from the Globbies in your photo’s of the Scene Club had a little tash then. I must admit he is the only person I remember with a tash at that time, but tashes do seem to have taken off in the Mod scene later on, looking at some of the One Up Club photo’s.

  7. ChrisC Says:

I have to agree with you there Lammy. Well due to the proof in the photo I cannot really say otherwise….Except, and here is the brilliant part. By then I would say that your fellow south sider Andy Murdoch was well over to the dark side of scooter boydome, so we can say without fear of contradiction that we still have a moustachioed Mod free club. Are you having that one !

  8. stevie fae cranhill Says:

its me, signing in from Amsterdam - to make you all jealous! - hope the mods are taking care of business - its been taken care of ok out here!

  9. ChrisC Says:

Its all the jetset life for you Stevie. What has Amstedam got that Saltcoats hasn’t, apart from a lot of mad people who are constantly stoned. Well okay forget that part then. I hope you enjoy the canals, but to tell you the truth we have one at the other end of Bishopbriggs that is the equal of anything in Maryhill.

Are there any Mods in Holland ? Or are they all psychedelic dudes.

  10. NGMods Says:

Stevie, whyts wrang wi signing on in Cranhill ? is Amsterdam nearer to you ?

I hope your not in one of those smoke cafes !!! you’ll end up bringing this site into disrepute haha

  11. CharlieM Says:

Hi Stevie, if you are in one of those smoke Cafes, tell Jim Morrison, Hendrix and Joplin, Jimmy The Mod wants them to do a write up for the website, ha ha!

  12. ChrisC Says:

I can most certainly get an interview with Jim Morrison for the site. Unfortunately it is Jim Morrison from Carntyne and not the dead flasher.

  13. NGMods Says:

Depending on the way the wind is blowing, mibee Big Chief Stevie is trying to send a few smoke signals over for us to read. Failing that, he may have a big peace pipe haha

  14. Lammy Chick Says:

Number 7 refers - Yes Chris I agree with your comments there, Mod Tash Free in the Scene Club :-)

Stevie - I’ve been to Amesterdam a few times now, have you done the Red Light Tour yet? I really enjoyed that one :-), but those canals were a bit of a pong. Do they still allow smoking over there? I hear that they do nice cakes :-)

    Jim Morrison flasher?

  15. NGMods Says:

Lammy Chick looks like I was in your neck of the woods in 91, found a ticket earlier for some nite I went to down there.

I’m surprising myself here for were I ended up in the serach for some cool sounds. haha

  16. Lammy Chick Says:

NGM - were did you go and what type of night was it, Northern Soul nights are still rather popular down here. We never lived here then, so it’s unlikely that we shimmied on the same dancefloor at that time.

  17. NGMods Says:

It was in The Pheasant Inn, is that still there ?

It was a Ska Soul Reggae Doo !!!

  18. ChrisC Says:

I see Stevie fae Amsterdam has not posted for a wee while I wonder why man. (or woman)

I’m glad you agree about the tash free zone for Mods that was the Scene Club Lammy. But I am surprised that you never heard about Jim Morrison being done for exposing himself. But then ‘People are Strange,’ and I am talking about him, not you.
