Born in London, January 10th 1945, after his family moved from Scotland, Roderick David Stewart was typical of many musicans who made the big time in the 1970s. They learnt their trade in the 1960’s and in the case of many of these careers, you can only just start to appreciate the life these people led in the hope of making it. Strong self determination was needed with the relentless gigging , most of these artists even set up their own equipment before a gig, including the sound check.
Rod Stewarts career in the 1960’s is well documented, he started off with the Soul Agents, then was in The Hoochie Coochie Men with Long John Baldry which later evolved into The Steampacket with Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll. In 1965 he featured in a ITV documentary titled “Rod The Mod” a name which he has kept to this day, which showed footage of The Steampacket. To date, I believe this footage has still to be unearthed.
Rods first taste of the big time arrived when The Steampacket supported the Rolling Stones and the Walker Brothers on tour in 1965. After the demise of The Steampacket Rod cut a few more solo 45’s, and also joined the Shotgun Express, with Beryl Marsden and Peter Bardens, and after that joined up with Jeff Beck in The Beck Group.
Here we have Rod’s first 45 from 1964 titled “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” which was a Sonny Boy
Williamson song, a nice uptempo beat record, that was typical of the Mod sound evolving at the time. An appearance on RSG still couldn’t help the record to chart.
Listening to both these tracks, it’s hard to believe that they were recorded 44 years ago. I did have the pleasure in meeting this Mod icon in the 1990’s, were he has kind enough to sign my Decca sleeve. Enjoy !
