Jackie De Shannon - TriLogy Scots Of St. James - Tic Toc
Jun 16

Not too much is known about the Glasgow Mod band the Blues Council who were formed in 1964. The line up included Fraser Calder (vocals), James Giffen (bass), Leslie Harvey (lead) who was Alex Harveys brother, Billy Adamson (drums), John McGinnis (piano), Larry Quinn (alto), Bill Patrick. The band quickly built up a strong following in Scotland and musicians alike. One of the quotes at the time attributed to the band was “We were cooler and more bluesy than the guitar-orientated groups, but not free blowing”, they also had that MOD image on stage.

Most of the bands that were formed in Scotland, in the early sixties were mainly soul orientated but the Blues Council opted for that more jazzy R&B sound and were soon signed up to Parlophone records were they released the classic 45 Baby Don’t Look Down b/w What Will I Do.

The band were tipped for the big time, but unfortunately, coming back from a gig in Edinburgh, 12 March 1965, their van crashed killing two members of the band, Fraser Calder and James Griffen. The band recruited two new members Bobby Patrick and Bobby Wishart but sadly they disbanded a short time later as the soul of the band had been taken from them. Both sides of the 45 can be heard here for all too enjoy.

One final twist too the story, after years of record collecting I obtained a 45 by a band called Eddies’s Crowd on CBS and was amazed to find it was the same song Baby Don’t Look Down just mixed up a bit differently, but sadly I don’t have any information on them.
