Ayr Aces Forum Modus Get Signed
Apr 24

targetI am receiving a lot of emails asking how the website got started and what prompted it all, this is how it all came about.

Jan 2007: I created videos and joined youtube, I didnt post any of my videos until Around August due to work commitments. Between Jan and August 2007 I spent some time dabbling with my music library and videos that I had collected over the years.

April 2007: I then created the http://glasgowmods.wordpress.com and http://northsoul.wordpress.com and http://bandstandmods.blogspot.com/ this was to test the waters so to speak and see if any of the old crew were online, I got some hits but found out with some research that the majority of users were confused with the sign up process of a wordpress.com site…. I then started to develop a self hosted website in the background but wasn’t sure if I would have the time etc…… I registeredglasgow mods logo Youtube April 1st for my videos.

Aug 2007: I decided to post a video of Robert Knight Love On A Mountain Top and it got a lot of viewings and interest. April Prior had got back in touch with me through my brother as they were connected on Bebo unknowing that we were related and I prompted to start hunting down the old mates which was inspired from my tribute videos.

September 2007: published my videos Glasgow Mods Tribute and my Northern Soul Compilation 1 and 2 which have 250k hits and 40k+ viewings. Published them on Google and Youtube.

Nov 2007: I was scheduled to be in Glasgow for a meeting with my business partner/clients and during that time was invited to the Friday Street do where I bumped, by accident into Charlie Murphy, Rab McNamara and Raymond Welch. We all had a ball. It was at this point I felt there was good enough reason to move the website portal forward.ktf2

Jan 2008: 9th of January: I registered Glasgow Mods multimedia website and decided to build the portal, the main aim was to provide an outlet where we could document the sixties knowledge and build a community for everyone too input. I approached April and Charlie asking them if they would like to help, April was too busy and declined, Charlie was very pleased to help out and decided to get involved with research and input.

Jan 2008: 25th of January: Site went live.

April 2008 1 year ON: Now 3 months on and over 50k readers worldwide with 468 email subscribers, 70 self hosted created videos, 500 comments, 200+ posts, connecting over 80 scooter clubs, acknowledged by wikipedia, scootering magazine, modculture and endorsed by people who have published and written about the Mod Scene/Sixties scene. Bringing together over 250 people who had lost contact and brought a wee ray of sunshine to old friends and new friends alike. We can safely assume now that it has been a small success.

THANK YOU :-)

The Videos That Started it all ENJOY

Hi Charlie.I do admit that I said in an earlier post that I liked ski pants (on the girls) , but not even in my world of stupid things occuring would I have got a pair and turned them into a pair of trousers. Either the EE Mod in question had amazingly skinny legs,or they were strangely baggy ski pants.

I wonder who first thought it would be a good idea to shave off people's eyebrows ? And did any of the girls shave other girls eyebrows off at a party ? I don't seem to remember the girls having this shaving fixation.

Hi Chris I remember a certain East End Mod down The Barras telling everyone how "groovy" his sky blue skin tight hipsters were, butterfly vents at the bottom, covered buttons, what he didn't know that I was in the Easterhouse "Buy Well" with his sister when she bought the girls ski pants they were made from, she was a cracking machinists, I watched her make them that day, I had paid her to make me a waist coat and hipsters, real hipsters and not ski pants conversions, it was priceless, he came down The Barras on his Lambretta 125 with his l Plates, he didn't know I had told a "few" lasses! He thought they were touching up his legs, cause he was looking "cool" Hee hee! He still didn't know when one of the lasses commented he had beautiful child bearing hips! Got him back for shaving my eye brow off at a party in Bishopbriggs, gelled and laquered my hair as well, eggs and flour the lot! He didn't laugh too well when the truth came out! I did! Especially as I had asked one of the Mods to loosen his Lammy exhaust while the lasses gave him the Rock God treatment! Twice in one day!

The abidding memory I have of the girls Mod gear is those suede and leather jackets, both the short versions and the three quarters length. How so many of the girls managed to get of hold of them in such good condition was always a mystery to me.

I always really fancied a light suede jacket with a leather collar (a boys one) 1960s style, but did not ever see one in the Briggait. Sadly I did not have the kings ransom it would have cost to get one made.

I also always thought that the girls hair was immaculate, and looked brilliant in that 60s bob.

To go back to NG's Q's (post 25!) - I think it was more to do with attitude than location, knew girls from outwith Glasgow for whom the "Modette" tag also got their hackles up - think if you were a "purist" (and the mini skirt look aint it!) or as near to that as you could be, then the modette tag felt all wrong!

Also agree with Chris C's post (30) as to what we wore at the time - more clued into the 60ts look - fitted leather ( got these in some amazing colours - remember having a bottle green one and a peacock blue one) / suede coat - "Briggait" turtle neck / twin set, trous etc. Would also echo Lammy's post as to how difficult it was to get "matching stuff" used to raid my mum's gear quite frequently!

As for the " dressing like a boy" thing that Lammy mentioned - for someone like me who is almost 6 foot, in the 80ts no womens shops sold trousers with long inside legs - so I spent most of the time wearing blokes trousers anyway - even b4 my mod days - so what a joy it was to discover that my 6ts counterparts had done the same - it was meant to be!

You are correct about us guys (mostly) not having the difficulty of having to find a bag to match our shoes Lammy. But we still put in a lot of effort in the rummaging through all sorts of garbage to find a gem in Paddy's. I remember once going through a pile of crap (not literally) and found a French t-shirt with a three quarter length sleeve. I wore the thing to death I loved it so much.

When I first went up to the Lindella and Scene Club I was astounded at the effort that people put into getting everything just right. From the cut of cloth, to covered buttons, to making sure the hair was perfect. The amount of time Bobby Black spent on getting his points right on his French cut hair was incredible.

Sorry to bring back bad Ski Pants memories Lammy. I always thought they looked brilliant. (On the girls that is) I don't think anyone would accuse you of looking boyish in them.

Awwwwwwh! The pains of finding a bag and shoes that match Lammy Chick! Look on the bright side , the "new" men of today also try too get a "man" bag to go with their shoes! Thank God I am a Mod! Their truly in touch with their feminine "issues" Don't worry I for one appreciated all the effort you'se Mod girl-ettes! put into getting dressed up for us Mods, As The Contours sung "First I Look At The Purse!" What a song! You can't beat a bit of Motown ALTHOUGH THE "New" Godather Of Soul Jerry Lee Lewis takes some beating! Preferrably around the napper with a piano lid springs too mind! hee hee!
